That investment is what makes the suspense land.

What Nora Roberts does particularly well here is the escalation of dread. Dustin is not introduced as a monster. He is introduced as an annoyance, then a concern, then a threat. That gradual shift mirrors exactly how real obsession tends to work, and the book is smarter for not rushing it. By the time the full danger becomes clear, the reader has already been living inside Arden's discomfort for long enough to feel it properly.

The Oregon setting is handled with real care. There is a sense of place throughout the second half of the book that gives Arden's recovery texture and breathing room. The town, the people she finds there, and especially Gideon feel like genuine parts of the story rather than backdrop. The romance develops slowly and with appropriate weight, which suits the tone Roberts is going for.

The book does not rush its ending. It earns the confrontation it builds toward, and the resolution feels proportionate to everything Arden has survived. Roberts respects the damage that has been done, which is not something every thriller in this register manages to do.

January LaVoy is an ideal narrator for this material. She keeps Arden's voice composed without letting it become flat, and her performance during the more frightening sections is controlled in a way that makes those moments more unsettling, not less. At 14 hours and 27 minutes, the audiobook never feels long. It feels exactly as long as the story needs to be.
