K. L. Slater has built a career on domestic suspense, and this one leans into a setting I did not expect from her, a private manor kitchen with its own hierarchy and its own secrets. Eight hours in, I still wanted more.
Isla's grief for her sister Clemmie sits underneath every scene without ever tipping into melodrama. Slater keeps her motivated but careful, someone smart enough to know that charging in with accusations will get her sent home before she learns anything useful. That restraint makes the slow reveal of Maplehurst's dysfunction land harder.
The manor itself functions almost as its own character. Staff turnover, unspoken rules about which doors stay closed, and a management style that rewards silence over honesty all build a picture of a household that has learned to protect itself at the expense of the people working inside it.
Slater is good at planting details early that only make sense later, and this book is no exception. A few of the twists I saw coming, but the ones I did not land with real weight, particularly the reveal tied to Clemmie's final weeks at the house.
The ending does not wrap things up too neatly, which fits a story built around institutions that protect their own regardless of the cost.
On the narration: with two narrators handling this one, Annabel Scholey and Laura Aikman, the dual performance gives Isla and the household staff distinct enough voices that following multiple perspectives never gets confusing. The tension in the back half of the book benefits especially from their pacing, which tightens noticeably as Isla gets closer to the truth.
