The inner game of money, according to T. Harv Eker

The question the book opens with is the one everybody has asked: why do some people seem to get rich without much visible effort while others work just as hard and never get anywhere? Eker's answer is that it has nothing to do with intelligence, timing, contacts or luck, and everything to do with a set of beliefs about money that people pick up long before they earn any.

He calls it your money blueprint: the internal script that decides how much you think you deserve, how you react to risk and what you do with whatever comes in. The book pairs that diagnosis with a set of declared intentions, the sort of sentences you are meant to repeat until they stop feeling ridiculous.

It is short by design, five hours and ten minutes, and it is the mindset half of personal finance rather than the arithmetic half: no budgets, no portfolios, just the part that decides whether you follow any of that advice.

Mindset first, spreadsheets later

There is a real gap in the personal finance shelf between books that explain compound interest and books that explain why you never actually save anything, and this one sits in the gap. It is about the beliefs underneath the behaviour, and Eker makes that argument quickly and without pretending it is complicated.

The useful part is the confrontation: the early chapters force you to notice what you actually think about people with money, including the assumptions you inherited without choosing them. The declarations are the part people either love or find embarrassing, depending on the reader.

Charles Constant reads the five hours and ten minutes in a steady, matter-of-fact way that keeps a book about mindset from turning into a lecture.

The complaint about it is consistent and fair: reviewers note that there is nothing novel in the advice itself, that it repeats what financial self-help has been saying for decades, and that the value is in the delivery rather than in the information. If you have read three books in this space you have probably heard all of it, though maybe not in this order.

I found it a good reset on the subject. If you prefer the version with more numbers in it, The Millionaire Next Door is on the site.
