The Emperor's Enemy (Unsurvivable Love Duet, Book 1)Audiobook

Jasmine Mas

She joined the army to destroy it, and got a partner instead

Zora Ravenal did not enlist out of patriotism. She joined an army in order to bring down the empire it serves, and she has spent years making herself useful enough to be trusted with real power: enough training, enough discipline, enough control to be named a Knight Mage, which puts her among the last line of defence against storm magic and makes her exactly the sort of person nobody suspects.

Then the war stops being theoretical. She is trapped in it, carrying secrets that would get her killed if anyone read them properly, and paired with the one man in the Commonwealth she should never be left alone with. He is a Royal Mage with a reputation for killing people and for losing his temper doing it, and, worse than either of those things, he is paying attention to her. They are supposed to train together and trust each other with their lives, which is difficult when both of them are calculating how long they can keep the other alive before it becomes a problem.

This opens a new duet from an author who has already shown what she does best: Jasmine Mas made her name with Blood of Hercules, and here she takes the same appetite for obsession and drops it into a war with no clean sides, using duet narration from Teddy Hamilton and Emma Wilder across 15 hours and 6 minutes.

★★★★☆
True enemies to lovers, and the bit where it stops making sense

Jasmine Mas has a signature, and it is not subtle: her male leads are obsessive, her heroines refuse to be rescued, and the plots run on a kind of controlled chaos that either lands as thrilling or does not land at all. The Emperor's Enemy is the strongest version of that formula yet, because for once the reason the two leads cannot be together is genuinely structural: Zora is inside the enemy army specifically to bring it down, and the man she has been assigned to work with is the enemy's instrument.

What works is the refusal to soften either of them. Zora is not a heroine who needs saving and the book means it, including in the scenes where she is outmatched, and the Royal Mage she is paired with is written as genuinely dangerous rather than merely brooding. The duet narration makes a real difference too: Teddy Hamilton and Emma Wilder perform each other's lines inside their own chapters instead of alternating whole chapters, and over fifteen hours that keeps the relationship feeling like a conversation rather than two monologues.

The problem is what happens to the plot in the second half, and I am not the only one who felt it. On The StoryGraph, a reader who had loved the author's earlier Blood of Hercules wrote that there the chaos was brilliant, while here I genuinely cannot tell you what I just read, having finished the whole book. A book club thread on r/fantasyromance was blunter, opening its review with the immortal line It, was a book? That is the specific failure mode of a duet opener built on secrets: once every character is lying to every other character, the reader loses the thread of what is actually at stake, and fifteen hours is a long time to spend unsure who wants what. The momentum of the first third does not survive the middle.

It is still worth your time if you like the genre at its most feral, and the ending sets up a second volume rather than pretending to close anything. If you have read the author before, the site has her earlier books to start with, and they are the ones I would recommend first to anyone new: Blood of Hercules and Psycho Shifters. If you want a wider shortlist, the site also has a top 10 of romantasy audiobooks.

The Emperor's Enemy opens the Unsurvivable Love Duet, the new series from Jasmine Mas, the author of Blood of Hercules. Zora Ravenal joined the Crimson Army for one reason: to destroy the empire it serves. She fought her way into becoming a Knight Mage, one of the last defences against storm magic, and now the war she has been preparing for has arrived.

She is stuck in it, hiding secrets that would get her killed, and paired with a Royal Mage with a body count, a temper and a very specific interest in her. They are supposed to train together, trust each other with their lives and somehow not kill each other first.
