Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Five profilers, one Christmas matchmaking job, and a killer who likes snow

The Naturals program takes teenagers who can do one impossible thing and turns them into investigators. Cassie reads people, Dean profiles them, Michael feels what they feel, Lia catches every lie, and Sloane trusts data over instinct. What none of them can manage is recovery. The case that nearly finished them is still in the room with them, and the FBI's answer is to hand them something almost absurd for December: a matchmaking job, with Christmas as the deadline.

The target is Special Agent Veronica Sterling, who has spent a career refusing herself the one thing she wants, and the puzzle is working out why. Reading a profiler means finding out what she is hiding, and the team is not built for emotional restraint. Then a series of crime scenes starts to look connected, a cold case stops being cold, and whoever is leaving bodies in the snow turns a harmless project into a Christmas nobody planned.

The Naturals come back with a Christmas mission, and it goes wrong the way it should

Bringing a series back after years is usually a nervous business, and Jennifer Lynn Barnes does it by changing the temperature rather than the furniture. Same five minds, same banter, entirely different job.

The premise is the best thing here. After the trauma of the previous case, sending the Naturals to play matchmaker is a genuinely funny idea, and it lets the group be a group again. Watching a group where one feels what others feel, one hears every lie, two profile for a living and one trusts the data try to engineer a romance for two people who are already obviously in love is exactly the kind of comedy these characters were built for. Sloane treating courtship as a dataset she can optimise is the high point for me, and I laughed out loud on the school run.

Underneath the Christmas comedy, the book never pretends everything is fine. Cassie is still dealing with what happened to them, and Barnes does not skip past the psychological fall-out just because the mission is a lighter one. That balance is why the series works: the fun is earned because the damage is real, and the new case creeping in around the edges reminds you that this group is never off duty for long.

Amber Faith makes ten hours feel much shorter than they are, and the ensemble is easy to follow thanks to small shifts of pace rather than theatrics. The one thing I would flag is that the mystery takes a while to properly bite, because the matchmaking plot occupies the first half and the crimes are a low hum until they are not. It is a deliberate choice and it pays off, but if you arrive expecting the relentless pacing of Bad Blood, give it a few hours before you judge.

You can start here, though it will spoil the emotional history that makes this one land. If you have followed the series and want more Barnes, look at The Gilded Blade, the third Grandest Game book, and The Same Backward as Forward if you like the way she writes complicated families. This is a Christmas book with a body count, and that is a very good thing.

Here is the part worth knowing before you decide: the free trial lets you take this audiobook without paying for it. You start the trial, you download the title, then you cancel, and the audiobook stays in your library permanently, exactly like a purchase. There is no requirement to finish it during the trial, and no countdown, so you can listen this week or next year. The only step not to forget is the cancellation itself.

And the format suits this kind of story. Ten hours split into short, punchy chapters is easy to fit around a commute, a school run or the washing up, and you can speed the narration up when the holiday banter gets leisurely or slow it down for the case scenes. A sleep timer, automatic bookmarking and picking up where you left off on a different device are all there, which matters when a chapter ends on a cliffhanger at midnight.
