The story follows the Lord of Dreams (who is also known as Sandman, Morpheus, Dream, and a host of other different names that various cultures have given him over time). He is one of the Endless (along with Death, Destiny, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium), and the story begins when he is imprisoned and stripped of his functional accessories by a group of humans attempting to capture Death. "Preludes and Nocturnes" covers the story of Dream's 70 years of imprisonment, his escape from this prison, and his journey to recover his working tools.
This first volume is relatively straightforward, an introduction where we get acquainted with Dream, learn about his realm and begin to understand how this universe is structured. If you didn't know, The Sandman is a property of DC, so from time to time the story calls upon DC heroes and villains such as John Constantine and Dr. Jonathan Crane (also known as the Scarecrow), and an attempt is made in the early chapters to turn Dream into a regular DC superhero. But as the chapters progress, Gaiman begins to distance his world from the mainstream of the DC universe and create his own little corner of the universe where he can tell stories without being limited by other DC stories.
