Rhode Island, 1846. Merritt Fernsby, a writer estranged from his family, inherits a remote estate in Narragansett Bay. The property, named Whimbrel House, has been uninhabited for over a century, but Merritt is ready to make it his home. However, as he tries to leave the house, the doors slam shut and lock behind him, trapping him inside.
Hulda Larkin from the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms is an expert in taming structures like Whimbrel House to preserve their historical and magical significance. She advises Merritt to make the house their ally to leave it. Hulda moves in to help Merritt, but even with her magic tools, uncanny staff, and augury skills, the work proves to be more difficult than expected. As they work together, the two grow closer, but the house holds secrets that are more dangerous than they anticipated. Moreover, something outside is threatening the enchantments of Whimbrel House.
The keeper of enchanted rooms, one of the best things I've ever read. Magic, murder, romance, it's got it all.
