What worked for me first was the sense of escalation. A lot of fantasy romance trilogies promise bigger stakes in the final installment and then just make the scenes louder. Burn actually feels larger. The pressure on the kingdom is constant, the personal fallout lands, and there is a real sense that earlier decisions have consequences now. That gives the romance more weight instead of less.

Briar remains one of the reasons this series holds together. She has dignity, stubbornness, and a real interior conflict that never feels pasted in for drama. Poet, on the other hand, is all sharp edges and instinct, but Jaster keeps finding ways to let that persona crack just enough. Their chemistry is still there, obviously, though what stayed with me longer was how much trust the book places in their bond once the story stops flirting with the idea and starts testing it.

I also appreciated that the fantasy elements are not treated like wallpaper. Court politics, rank, loyalty, and public expectation keep pressing into every scene. That friction gives the audiobook a pulse. Some moments are tender, some are brutal, and the shift between them feels earned rather than theatrical.

On the narration: Will Thorne and Charlotte Claremont return for the dual performance, and by this point they sound fully settled into these characters. Thorne gives Poet the swagger and strain he needs, while Claremont keeps Briar composed without flattening her emotions. At 18 hours and 20 minutes, the pacing holds because both narrators know when to pull back and when to let the heat rise.
