Elara herself has hardened since Crown Me Dead, and it shows in how she approaches this bargain. She's not the same woman being maneuvered by other people's plans anymore. She's the one doing the maneuvering now, and that shift in power between her and Vale drives most of the tension in the back half of the book.
As the finale to a duet, this delivers on the promise of the first book without dragging things out. Loose threads around the curse, the throne Elara technically holds, and Vale's true nature all get resolved, and the ending leans emotional in a way the darker first book only hinted at.
Julio Maxwell and Jacci Prior return for the narration, and their dynamic has only sharpened since the first book. At 8 hours and 17 minutes, the pacing never wastes a scene. Maxwell gives Vale a colder, more guarded register that slowly cracks as the story goes on, while Prior lets Elara's exhaustion and determination sit side by side without either one overpowering the performance.
