On November 22, 1963, three gunshots shattered the tranquility of Dallas, ending President Kennedy's life and irrevocably altering the world. But what if you had the power to change it all back?
In this brilliantly conceived masterpiece, Stephen King, a writer who has absorbed the social, political, and cultural fabric of his generation more imaginatively than any other, invites listeners on a mind-bending journey into the past and the tantalizing prospect of rewriting history.
The odyssey commences with Jake Epping, a 35-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who supplements his income by teaching GED classes. He assigns a unique topic to his students: an event that profoundly reshaped their lives. Among the essays, one stands out—a chilling, gut-wrenching narrative recounting the night over 50 years ago when Harry Dunning's father returned home, wielding a sledgehammer to massacre his mother, sister, and brother. Reading this essay is an epiphanic moment for Jake, catalyzing a seismic shift in his life, akin to Harry's and the entire nation's destiny in 1963.
Shortly thereafter, Jake's friend Al, owner of the local diner, confides a secret: his storeroom serves as a gateway to the past, leading to a specific day in 1958. Al recruits Jake for a mission that has consumed him—an endeavor to thwart the Kennedy assassination.
Thus, Jake embarks on a new existence as George Amberson, thrust into an alternate reality—a world of Ike and JFK, Elvis and American muscle cars, sock hops, and pervasive cigarette smoke. From the gloomy streets of Derry, Maine (where unsettling business involving the Dunnings must be attended to), to the warm-hearted town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake finds himself dangerously entangled in love, every twist in the road inexorably converges on a solitary figure: Lee Harvey Oswald. In Dallas, the past metamorphoses into a heart-pounding thriller, challenging the very fabric of history itself. Time travel has never seemed so credible. Or so bone-chilling.
11/22/63 is my favorite @StephenKing book and one of my favorites of all time. I listen to the audiobook at night in bed. Right now it's Jake and Sadie's first lindy hop. A warm hug of a book with plenty of thrill and tension. I love love love the characters he created.
