Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy is a brutal and poetic tale set in the American West during the mid-19th century. The story follows "the Kid," a nameless teenage runaway who becomes embroiled in the violent and chaotic world of Indian-hunting expeditions.
After wandering through the desolate landscape of the Texas-Mexico border, the Kid joins a scalphunting gang led by the enigmatic and malevolent Judge Holden. Holden, a larger-than-life figure, exerts a powerful influence over the gang with his philosophical musings and unrelenting savagery. The gang's journey is marked by relentless violence, with skirmishes against Native American tribes, rival groups, and the unforgiving wilderness.
As the Kid navigates this nightmarish landscape, he grapples with his own moral compass and the seemingly inescapable pull of violence. The novel culminates in a haunting and ambiguous confrontation between the Kid and Judge Holden, leaving readers with lingering questions about the nature of good and evil.
The Richard Poe audiobook is excellent. I’ve read Blood Meridian a couple times but listened to parts of the audiobook dozens of times.
