In this delightful and poignant novel, reminiscent of A Man Called Ove, we follow the journey of Tova Sullivan, a widow who finds solace in working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium. She befriends Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus who has a curmudgeonly personality and an extraordinary intellect. Despite his reluctance to engage with his human captors, Marcellus develops an unlikely bond with Tova, who is still reeling from the mysterious disappearance of her son Erik over thirty years ago.
Through Marcellus' insights and deduction skills, Tova finally finds closure and learns the truth about her son's disappearance. Shelby Van Pelt's debut novel, Someone Else's Ocean, is a heartwarming tale of friendship, redemption, and hope, reminding us that even the unlikeliest of connections can bring profound healing.

Fantastic tale. Captivating characters. Stellar narration. Early into the book, I was compelled to verify the author’s name as the writing exuded a Fredrick Backman-esque charm. Additionally, I identified the narrator’s voice from Backman’s novels, which was a delightful surprise. This book resonated with me as deeply as my cherished Backman narratives. The only drawback: I’m now grappling with a severe book-hangover.
