Upon the death of Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore, she is not only recognized as North Carolina’s wealthiest woman, but also its most infamous. A well-known kidnapping victim in her childhood and a four-time widow, Ruby held sway over the small town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family’s estate nestled high in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
However, in the wake of her demise, her adopted son, Camden, shows little interest in the house or the wealth—and even less in the remaining McTavishes. Instead, he renounces his inheritance, embracing a regular life as an English teacher in Colorado and marrying Jules, a woman equally keen to flee her own chaotic past.
A decade later, the death of his uncle draws Cam and Jules back into the family circle at Ashby House. Its vistas remain as breathtaking as ever, its rooms as refined, but Ruby’s legacy is unavoidable.
And as Ashby House exerts its hold on Jules and Camden, questions about the notorious heiress emerge. Was there any validity to the enduring rumors following her vanishing as a girl? What truly transpired with those four husbands, who all perished under enigmatic circumstances? And what prompted her to adopt Cam initially? Soon, Jules and Cam comprehend that an inheritance can involve much more than what’s stipulated in a will—and that familial ties extend well beyond the grave.
Just finished ‘The Heiress’ by Rachel Hawkins. Family drama thriller. This author likes wildly implausible plots & she pulls it off with strong endings (and lots of twists & turns). It’s a cold one here today — so I spent the day curled up in my recliner & devoured this book 😎
