After uncovering a dark family secret, Caroline Payne embarks on a journey through the history of Britain's World War II spy network and glamorous 1930s Paris to save her family's reputation.
Caroline, an ordinary working woman, receives a call from Mat Hammond, an old college friend and historian, revealing a scandalous secret that had been kept hidden for decades. Her great-aunt, a British citizen, had betrayed her family and country during World War II to marry her German lover.
Determined to uncover the truth and restore her family's name, Caroline travels to her ancestral home in London with Mat, where they discover diaries and letters that reveal Caroline's grandmother and great-aunt were known as the "Waite sisters." These vivacious and charming sisters grew up during the interwar years, a time of peace and luxury filled with romance, dances, and jazz clubs. However, their buoyant tone soon turns somber as one sister leaves for Paris, despite rumblings of an impending war.
As Caroline and Mat sift through the letters, they uncover stories of spies and secrets, love and heartbreak, and the events of one fateful evening in 1941 that changed everything. Each discovery raises new questions about Caroline's great-aunt and her involvement with the Nazis.
This rich historical novel by award-winning author Katherine Reay challenges Caroline to choose between embracing her own love and proceeding with caution to ensure her family's decades-old wounds can heal without further tearing them apart.

I’m delighted I chose to listen to this instead of reading it. The narrator excelled in delivering the diverse accents and seamlessly transitioned between the present day narrative, letters, and past recounting.
The pacing of this book was to my liking, with a balanced dose of intrigue propelling the story forward. The curiosity surrounding her aunt’s fate kept me engaged, and the revelation did not disappoint.
