Charlie and Eve, a young queer couple who flip houses, are thrilled by the amazing deal they scored on a charming home in a lovely neighborhood. But during renovations, a knock on the door disrupts their work. A man and his family stand there, claiming they once lived in the house and asking to show the kids around. Eager to please, Eve agrees to let them in.
From the moment they cross the threshold, strange things begin to unfold. The family’s youngest child goes missing, and an eerie presence lurks in the basement. The visitors seem oblivious to hints that it’s time to leave, and when Charlie disappears, Eve’s grasp on reality begins to unravel. Is something sinister tied to the house—or is it all in Eve’s mind?
Just finished WE USED TO LIVE HERE by Marcus Kliewer, a tight lil psychological horror that's been generating some buzz for its gimmicky structure a la House Of Leaves which, having seen such books dozens of times now, made me initially reticent. Happy to report I was wrong.
