Audiobook details
Year two at Basgiath is where the rules change
Nobody expected Violet Sorrengail to live through her first year at Basgiath War College, and she made it anyway. But Threshing was only the opening test. The second year starts with a harder question: what will the college ask of a rider whose body is the frailest in the quad?
The training is brutal on purpose, built to push every cadet past what they can bear. Violet also has a new problem in the form of a vice commandant who has made her his personal project. He wants her to understand how powerless she is, and he knows the one thing that could make it stop: turning her back on Xaden Riorson.
Behind the drills and the dragon fire sits a secret the college has kept for centuries, and Violet knows more about it than is safe. This edition is a GraphicAudio dramatization, split into two parts and staged with a full cast, sound effects and cinematic music. Khaya Fraites and Gabriel Michael voice Violet and Xaden.

I thought a dramatization would add a little color to a story I already knew. It added more than that. GraphicAudio cuts Iron Flame into two parts, 11 hours and 38 minutes for the first and 9 hours and 27 minutes for the second, and I lost track of the clock in both.
The story starts right after Threshing, with Violet still the smallest and most fragile rider at Basgiath. Year two is designed to push everyone past their limits, and she has less margin than anyone in the room. That pressure runs through the whole first part.
Then the new vice commandant arrives. He has decided Violet should learn how powerless she is unless she betrays Xaden, and those scenes are the ones that stayed with me after I stopped listening. Hearing a threat spoken aloud feels colder than reading it on a screen.
The second part turns toward the secret Basgiath has hidden for centuries. I will keep quiet about the details. The fights and the dragons come across differently when a sound team has built them from scratch, and I could follow the action better than I did on my own read.
Khaya Fraites voices Violet and Gabriel Michael voices Xaden, the same pairing from the Fourth Wing dramatization, and it holds up. Several other actors share the rest of the cast, with sound effects and cinematic music underneath, and the full run comes to about 21 hours. If you would rather hear one voice for the whole book, the standard edition read by Rebecca Soler and Teddy Hamilton is the better fit.
