The Phantom of the Opera, told from Christine's side

Christine Daaé is a rising soprano with a gift she has only just started to accept, and she has spent long enough in the chorus of the Opera Populaire to know what she wants: to be heard. What she gets instead is two men who refuse to let her fade quietly back into the line.

The first is Raoul, her childhood friend turned devoted admirer, offering a future that looks like sunlight and safety. The second has no name and no face: a masked figure who lives beneath the opera house, whose brilliance and dangerous devotion to Christine's talent wake something in her that she cannot name and cannot put down.

As Christine's star rises, so does the tension between the two men, and she is the one who has to decide who she is once the curtain comes down, and what she is willing to risk for the life she wants. Erin A. Craig reimagines Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera and puts Christine at the centre of it.

A full-cast Phantom retelling that lives inside Christine's head

The obvious draw is the production: a full cast of Broadway and West End performers, with newly recorded vocals and orchestral excerpts from the musical itself, and it is genuinely a different experience from a standard single-narrator audiobook. What surprised me is how much Craig's Christine gains from being written from the inside.

What works best is what the book adds: Christine's ambition, her grief for her father, and the way her talent is both hers and something the men around her keep trying to own. Raoul gets far more room than the stage version gives him, and the love story between them is written with more care than most retellings bother with.

On audio the casting is the selling point and it delivers. Hearing performers who have actually played these roles sing the excerpts is the reason to choose this format over the print edition, and the narration keeps the gothic atmosphere without tipping into melodrama.

The reservations come from Phantom loyalists, and they are specific. Several readers say the pacing is the real problem: too much time inside Christine's head, and stretches where the new material reads as filler between the moments everyone already knows by heart. Others, including longtime fans of the author, felt that the changes made to keep Christine at the centre cost the story some of its tension, and that she comes across as naive rather than empowered. If you know the musical note for note, expect an argument.

For me the trade-off is worth it, because the audiobook does something the stage version cannot: it lets you live inside Christine instead of watching her from the stalls. If you want more of Erin A. Craig in a colder, stranger register, The Thirteenth Child is already on the site.
