Picking up after the chaos of Chains, the story drops Felix into a north that is wrecked even though he technically won. I liked that the book does not pretend victory is clean. The Hierocracy is in pieces, opportunists are everywhere, and a lot of the early tension comes from holding ground rather than charging forward. It gave the finale a weight that felt earned.

At nearly thirty-five hours, this is the longest entry in the series, and Gonnella uses the runtime to settle threads that have been hanging for years. Some stretches are slower, more about consolidating power and relationships than fighting, but I never felt my attention drift. When the big confrontations land, they hit hard, and the progression mechanics still scratch that specific itch of watching a character grow into his full strength.

What has always set Unbound apart for me is that Felix breaks and rebuilds as a person, not just as a stat block. That holds true here. The emotional beats around his allies carry real cost, and the ending respects everything the series asked of him. I closed it feeling like the story was complete, which is rarer than it should be in this genre.

Travis Baldree narrates, and at this point he simply is Felix to me. He has voiced all twelve books, and that continuity pays off in the finale, where a familiar inflection on a returning character can hit like a memory. His pacing through the longer reflective passages is patient, his combat scenes crackle with energy, and across nearly thirty-five hours he never once sounds tired. He is a huge part of why this series works on audio.
