The Janitor is short, sharp, and doesn't waste a minute of its three hours. Don Winslow packs a full cast of shady clients into a story that moves fast without ever feeling rushed, and Kelly Henderson makes for a wonderfully cynical guide through all of it.
What I liked most is how Winslow refuses to make Kelly likeable in any conventional sense. He's a former lawyer who chose this life, and the story never pretends he's a reluctant hero forced into shady work. He's good at it, he knows he's good at it, and that self-awareness gives the whole piece its dry, knowing tone.
The parade of clients (the politician, the actress, the fading star) each get just enough space to feel real without slowing down the plot. Winslow has always been good at sketching a whole person in a few lines, and this story leans hard on that skill given how little time it has to work with.
The twist, when it lands, earns itself rather than coming out of nowhere. I won't say more than that, but readers who like their crime fiction morally murky will find plenty to enjoy in how the ending reframes everything that came before it.
Titus Welliver's narration is exactly right for this material. He gives Kelly a low, unhurried voice that sounds like a man who has said too many careful things to too many people, and that world weary calm holds the whole three hours together. It's a short listen, but Welliver makes it feel complete rather than rushed.
