The Wakarusa setting is the star of the show. A small Indiana town where everyone knows everyone and nobody says what they mean, it feels lived in and quietly menacing. Margot is a compelling protagonist, a woman haunted by survivor's guilt who returns home and finds the past waiting for her. The parallel between January and Natalie gives the plot real momentum, and Flowers knows exactly how to dangle a clue just out of reach. If you are a Crime Junkie listener, the rhythm will feel familiar, in the best way.

I will also be honest about the flaws, because they are real. The book runs longer than it needs to, with a middle section that circles the same suspects a few too many times. Some readers have also found the resolution divisive, and I understand why. For a debut it is remarkably confident, but it is not a tight, surgical thriller. It is sprawling, a little messy, and very much the work of a storyteller used to having hours of runtime to build suspense rather than a tight three-act structure.

If you enjoyed The Missing Half, Flowers' second novel, this is where it all started, and the audiobook adds another layer with the author herself among the narrators. I would recommend it to anyone who likes their thrillers heavy on atmosphere and small-town secrets, with the caveat that it asks for patience in the middle. It held me to the end, and the questions it raises about what neighbors are capable of stayed with me long after the final chapter.
