I read Big Little Lies years ago and adored the HBO series, but hearing Caroline Lee read it is what finally made the whole thing click for me. She gives every one of the dazzlingly crabby, fiercely loving mothers of Pirriwee Public a voice that is unmistakable, and Liane Moriarty's slow, witty unspooling of a town headed for disaster kept me utterly absorbed.
What makes this book so special is how Moriarty buries the fuse before you even know it is lit. The brilliant framing device, a police interview set after the trivia-night catastrophe, lets her flash on the future disaster in fragments while she takes her time charming you with the present. You know something terrible is coming, and you still cannot look away from the deliciously petty school-gate politics that lead to it.
The three leads are all wonderful in different ways. Madeline is the magnetic, deeply loyal firebrand whose messy history with her ex-husband and his new wife keeps threatening to ignite. Celeste is the heartbreak of the book, elegant and hiding old wounds, and her arc is handled with enormous compassion.
