Two grieving hearts find each other in the space their losses left behind
Dr. Layanna James spends her days repairing broken hearts as one of the world's top cardiothoracic surgeons, yet she has no idea how to mend her own. At forty, hollowed out by the sudden death of her husband Angel, she moves through a life that no longer seems to fit. Caleb Black understands that emptiness better than anyone. A retired pro athlete who lost his wife Maria to illness, he has landed in Winston Hills with no clear sense of where to go next.
The two of them are bound together by a painful thread, because Caleb was the husband of Layanna's late best friend. What starts as quiet companionship between two people who recognize their own grief in each other slowly warms into something they did not go looking for. Comfort turns to laughter, then to a pull neither of them can quite explain away, and every step toward one another means walking straight through guilt and the people they have lost.
C.M. Barnes writes a slow-burn romance that takes its time, letting attraction grow out of shared mourning rather than rushing past it. Long-buried family secrets complicate the path, and the heat, when it arrives, feels like a reward for honesty rather than a shortcut. Told in duet style by Wesleigh Siobhan and Sharif Stephens, the audiobook gives each voice its own ache, and the result is a tender, sometimes steamy story about daring to want a future after loss.

I went in expecting a standard widowed-to-lovers romance and got something with more emotional weight than I bargained for. The grief here is real and uncomfortable, and that is exactly what made the eventual romance land for me. I listened to most of it in two long sittings on a quiet weekend.
The premise pulls at something tender. Layanna is a brilliant heart surgeon who cannot fix her own broken heart, and Caleb is the grieving husband of her late best friend. That connection makes every step toward each other feel loaded, because moving forward means reckoning with the people they both lost. Barnes does not rush it, and I respected that the comfort between them comes first, long before anything like attraction.
The slow burn is properly slow, which I loved. So much of the first half is about two people sitting in their loss and slowly realizing they feel a little less alone together. There are flashes of humor woven through that keep it from getting too heavy, and they are well placed. When the relationship finally tips into romance, it feels earned rather than handed over.
I will be honest about one thing: the spice ramps up a lot in the back half, and at times it crowds out the emotional thread that made the opening so strong. If you came mainly for the grief story, you may find yourself wanting a touch more plot late on. For me it was a fair trade, because the chemistry is genuinely there, but it is worth knowing this one gets seriously steamy.
The duet narration is what sells it on audio. Wesleigh Siobhan gives Layanna a clinical composure that cracks in exactly the right places, and Sharif Stephens makes Caleb's quiet, hard-to-voice grief feel honest rather than performed. Hearing both sides of the romance in separate voices deepened the back and forth, and at a little under eight hours the pacing never sagged. A strong listen for anyone who likes their romance with real feeling underneath the heat.
