The perfect political wife, and the body buried in her own back garden
Maya Stone has built her whole life around being the perfect politician's wife. She knows when to smile, what to wear, and how to keep a message on track, and as a general election approaches, she and her husband Jeremy look ready to sweep the polls. Then a body is found buried in the garden behind their immaculate home, a young girl, and the cameras that once adored the Stones turn on them without mercy.
Jeremy insists it is nothing more than political dirty tricks, a smear designed to sink his campaign. Maya wants to believe him. But half-heard conversations and small wrongnesses she had trained herself to ignore start to gather in her mind, and when Jeremy is arrested, she can no longer look away. The man she has stood beside for years may be a stranger, and the lies around her run deeper than anything she imagined.
Sarah A. Denzil turns the polished surface of public life into something genuinely unsettling, a study of loyalty pushed past its breaking point. Sheridan Smith, the BAFTA-winning actor, narrates with a full supporting cast, giving Maya's slow unravelling real intimacy on audio. The title cuts both ways before the end, because devotion, in this story, is exactly what makes a person dangerous.

I picked this up for two reasons: I like a domestic thriller with a public-life setting, and Sheridan Smith narrating sealed the deal. It delivered exactly the kind of twisty, slightly soapy suspense I was in the mood for, and I finished it faster than I planned to.
The setup is irresistible. Maya Stone is the picture-perfect wife of an ambitious politician, right up until a young girl's body turns up buried in their garden. From there the story peels back the carefully managed image of their marriage one layer at a time. I am a sucker for the how-well-do-you-really-know-your-spouse premise, and Denzil leans into it hard.
It moves quickly, with overheard conversations and buried secrets piling up fast. I had a couple of the turns figured out early, but there were others I did not see coming, and the final stretch genuinely surprised me. The characters are mostly unlikeable, which usually bothers me, yet here it works because the whole point is that everyone is performing a version of themselves.
It is worth flagging that the story deals with heavy material, including the loss of a child, and it can get bleak. This is not a cozy listen. A few of the later twists asked me to stretch my disbelief, but I was enjoying myself enough not to mind, and the central question of how far devotion can be twisted held it together for me.
Sheridan Smith is the standout. Her Maya is composed on the surface with something fraying underneath, and she finds every crack in that polished exterior. The supporting cast adds texture without ever pulling focus, and the production has the immersive, almost dramatized feel that makes these Originals so easy to binge. I would happily listen to Smith read the phone book, and here she has far better material than that.
