Two strangers, one island, and the last wormholes on Earth
Celeste Varick has a plan that sounds almost reasonable until you say it out loud. She charters a flight to a remote island on Lake Michigan, hikes into the woods, and goes looking for the last wormholes left on Earth, intending to step into one. She has no idea where in the timeline she will come out, or what it will take to mend a past she has never been able to leave behind. A little help would not hurt.
That help arrives in the unlikely shape of Everett Ludlow, the only other soul on the island, who booked the same charter to chase the same wormholes at the exact same moment. He is not a man who believes in fate, but he is desperate enough to gamble on jumping forward in time to save someone he loves. So the two of them strike an uneasy partnership, braving the wilderness together and, without quite meaning to, tempting each other as much as the unknown.
This is Cara Bastone working in her favorite register, warm and funny, full of the kind of banter that makes you forget you are listening to a story about time travel at all. The audiobook is a full-cast production in Dolby Atmos, led by Emily Bader and Lewis Pullman, whose chemistry carries the romance. The real suspense is quietly personal: whether it is braver to leap through a wormhole to rewrite what hurts, or to stay in the present and risk being happy with someone new.

I am a sucker for a good time-travel romance, and I went into this one expecting cute and fun. It is both of those, but it also snuck up on me emotionally in a way I did not see coming. By the end I was laughing one minute and reaching for tissues the next.
The premise is delightfully bananas in the best way. Celeste and Everett both turn up on the same tiny island, chasing the same wormholes, each carrying a private reason for wanting to mess with time. I loved that the science is kept loose and playful rather than bogged down in rules. The story is far more interested in the two of them than in how the wormholes technically work, and that was the right call.
What makes it sing is the banter. Bastone writes dialogue that actually sounds like two clever people falling for each other while pretending they are not, and the back and forth had me grinning. Underneath the jokes, though, both characters are grieving something, and the book takes that seriously. The contrast between the humor and the ache is what gives it real staying power.
I will say the time-travel logic is easy to poke holes in if you want to, but I did not want to. The emotional rules stay consistent even when the physics are hand-wavy, and that is what matters here. It is a comfort listen with a lump in its throat, and it earns its happy resolution rather than just handing it over.
The full-cast production is where the audio really pulls ahead of the printed version. Emily Bader and Lewis Pullman lead as Celeste and Everett, and their chemistry is the engine of the whole thing, every pause and laugh landing exactly right. The supporting voices fill out the world, and the Dolby Atmos mix gives the island a real sense of space and weather. This is a story built to be heard.
