A Story That Keeps You Up at Night
Adeline Reilly never expected her inheritance to come with eyes in the dark.
Parsons Manor is beautiful yet suffocating, filled with secrets that whisper through its halls. As Adeline settles into her new home to write, she begins to sense it. Someone is watching her. Someone who knows her every move.
She calls herself The Manipulator, a woman who believes she can read people like books. But her control shatters when she meets The Shadow, the man who moves through the darkness and refuses to let her go. The more she tries to escape him, the deeper he pulls her in.
As the truth behind her family's past unravels, Adeline finds herself trapped between terror and desire in a dangerous game that blurs the line between love and obsession.
Haunting Adeline is the first audiobook in the Cat and Mouse Duet, a chilling blend of gothic mystery, psychological suspense, and dark romance that lingers long after the final word.

Experience the atmospheric narration that brings this dark tale to life

I went in knowing the basic premise: a woman inherits a gothic manor, there's a stalker, it's dark romance. I thought I had a reasonable idea of what I was signing up for. By the time I was an hour in, I'd quietly cancelled my plans for the evening and settled in for the night.
The structure is one of the things Carlton handles well here. The book alternates between Adeline's point of view and Zade's, and the two voices are genuinely different. Adeline narrates her present situation, but woven through it are the diary entries of her great-grandmother Gigi, who may have had a stalker of her own decades earlier. That parallel timeline does a lot of work. It keeps the gothic atmosphere grounded in something real and gives the obsession between the two leads a history that feels earned rather than invented.
Zade is not an easy character to like. Carlton doesn't soften what he does or ask you to find it romantic straight away. He's methodical, patient, and completely certain that he will eventually have what he wants. What makes him complicated is the subplot that runs underneath the main story, the one involving human trafficking and the network he's been quietly dismantling for years. It creates a genuinely strange tension, this man who is capable of real violence against people who hurt others, and yet who is also doing something that looks a lot like love in the most unsettling possible way. Whether that tension works for you will probably determine how much you enjoy the book overall. It worked for me.
The 2026 production adds two narrators to the original Teddy Hamilton and Michelle Sparks cast, bringing in Tempest Mensah and Grayson Owens for what is effectively a full cast recording across 16 hours and 45 minutes. The result is noticeably more immersive than a standard duet. Scenes that previously relied on two voices to carry multiple characters now have room to breathe. Hamilton's performance as Zade has always been strong, his delivery is low and controlled in a way that makes the character feel genuinely dangerous rather than just brooding. Sparks gives Adeline something to push back against, and the moments where her composure slips feel unforced.
One note worth mentioning: this book ends on a cliffhanger, and Carlton does not ease you into it. The final hour moves fast, and you will want Hunting Adeline ready to go. I did not have it ready. I learned from that.

I’ve delved into this book series twice over. (A heads up for those who revel in the intensely dark and provocative themes that provoke a bout of self-reflection on your mental state—this one’s tailored for you!)
-But oh, the revelation! The instant Teddy’s voice graced my ears as the narrator, it was an instantaneous decision. Regardless of my familiarity with the series, purchasing the audiobook was a must. I yearn for this man to narrate the chapters of my life.
I love it
