The final hunt in a world built on fear
In Hunting Adeline, H. D. Carlton brings the Cat and Mouse Duet to its brutal conclusion. After the events of Haunting Adeline, Adeline is dragged into the heart of a trafficking ring, trapped among men who treat human lives as currency. Survival becomes a series of small decisions made in the shadows while she fights to hold on to who she is.
Zade is still out there, following every thread that might lead him to the woman he refuses to lose. His war against the network that took her grows more violent as he tears through the people who stand between them. Each step forces Adeline to confront the darkness in herself, the pieces of her that understand him more than she wants to admit.
As the hunt closes in, the line between rescuer and monster stays razor thin. Adeline's choices, and Zade's willingness to burn everything in his way, decide whether their connection becomes a lifeline or the final blow that breaks them both.

I had Hunting Adeline ready to go before I even finished Haunting Adeline. That cliffhanger left no room for hesitation. What I was not quite prepared for was how different this second book feels in tone, and how much of it belongs entirely to Adeline rather than to the push and pull between her and Zade.
The two leads spend a significant portion of the book separated. Adeline is inside the trafficking network, navigating a world where survival depends on reading people correctly and never showing the wrong thing on your face. Zade is outside it, working his way through a chain of people who all end up worse for having met him. Carlton keeps the two threads moving at different speeds, and the contrast works. Adeline's chapters are quieter, more internal, more frightening in a way that slow-building dread tends to be. Zade's are the opposite. The book earns its length of 18 hours and 55 minutes because neither thread outstays its welcome.
What Carlton does well here that some second books in dark romance duets do not manage is keeping Adeline's agency intact even when her circumstances strip away almost everything else. She is not passive. The choices she makes inside the network, the small acts of resistance and the larger ones, are the backbone of her arc. The recovery thread that runs through the back half is handled with more care than I expected from a book that also contains a significant amount of Zade being extremely Zade.
Teddy Hamilton is required to voice multiple antagonists in this installment, including some deeply unpleasant ones, and he does not soften any of them. That is the harder part of his performance here compared to the first book, where the darkness was concentrated in a single character he was actively sympathetic toward. Michelle Sparks carries Adeline through a much wider emotional range than Haunting Adeline demanded, and the most difficult chapters are the ones where her restraint as a narrator does more work than any dramatic delivery could. The 2026 production adds Tempest Mensah, Grayson Owens and Ava Lucas to fill out the expanded cast, and the additional voices give the trafficking network scenes a texture the earlier duet format could not have provided.
