The central dynamic works because Sheridan Anne does not soften it into something polite. Caesar is written as dangerous, self-possessed, and very aware of the hold he has. That could have tipped into caricature, but the book keeps its footing by letting desire and unease sit in the same room. The result is dark romance that actually understands its own tone.

I also liked that the book does not waste time pretending the emotional risks are small. The vow itself gives the story a shape, but it also gives it tension, because every scene is haunted by the fact that the rule is impossible.
