Two people who know each other too well to pretend
Kimberly Reed and Xander Knight have a history that's impossible to escape. They were once best friends, the kind of bond that should have lasted forever. But something broke between them, and now he's the worst kind of enemy: someone who knows every secret she has and uses them to destroy her. Xander is heartbreakingly beautiful, ridiculously popular, and brutally cruel, a knight who has no intention of doing any saving.
For Xander, what they had became a nightmare disguised as a dream. Kimberly seems fragile and sweet on the surface, but he knows the truth about her. She's hiding a darkness beneath the innocent exterior, and she thinks she can keep it from him. She can't. He sees through every mask she wears, and he's not letting her hide.
Set in the world of Royal Elite, this is the story of two people who were meant to be on opposite sides of a war neither of them started. Their hatred is a game, and neither is willing to back down. But under all the cruelty, the history between them refuses to die. Black Knight is part of the Royal Elite series and can be listened to on its own, though reading the previous books adds depth to the world.

There's something irresistible about a story where the hero and heroine know each other better than anyone else and hate each other anyway, and Black Knight delivers that perfectly. Kimberly and Xander's history gives their conflict so much more weight than a simple stranger-to-stranger bully romance. They were best friends once, and the betrayal between them cuts deep. Watching them tear each other apart while the old connection keeps surfacing was completely addictive. This is Rina Kent doing what she does best.
What makes Black Knight stand out is the history. Kimberly and Xander aren't strangers, they were best friends who became enemies, and that foundation makes every cruel word and every charged glance hit harder. Xander knows exactly how to wound Kimberly because he knows her better than anyone, and Kimberly is determined to fight back despite seeming so fragile on the surface. Their back and forth is laced with years of hurt, and the slow reveal of what tore them apart kept me completely hooked.
Xander is a different flavor of anti-hero than Aiden King, which I appreciated. He's still dark and possessive, but his cruelty comes from a place of hurt rather than cold calculation. The way he's torn between punishing Kimberly and the part of him that still cares is written beautifully. Kimberly, for her part, is far stronger than she lets on, and seeing her darkness come to the surface is satisfying. Rina Kent writes morally gray characters with real depth, and both of these are prime examples.
The narration by Shane East and Keira Stevens is excellent, as always. East gives Xander that sharp, wounded intensity, while Stevens brings Kimberly's hidden steel to life. At 9 hours and 26 minutes, it's a well-paced listen that balances the cruelty with genuine emotion. If you've read Twisted Kingdom, you'll love seeing the next generation of Royal Elite, and Black Knight works as a great entry point too. This is dark romance that hooks you and doesn't let go.
