The king who rules with cruelty and the girl who refuses to fall
Astrid is used to being invisible at Royal Elite School, just another face in the crowd that no one notices. But everything changes the day she catches the attention of the wrong person. Suddenly her quiet life is torn apart, she's hunted and left to fend for herself, and the man responsible sees her as nothing more than a challenge to conquer.
That man is Levi, the king of Royal Elite, a man who doesn't believe in mercy or fairy tales. He gives Astrid three commands: bow, break, and bend the knee. Fight me all you want, he warns, because sooner or later you'll be mine. He's convinced she'll submit like everyone else who's crossed him, and he's certain he's already won.
But Levi has underestimated Astrid. She's not the pushover he expects her to be, and she's not going to let him destroy her without a fight. The girl he thinks he's broken is planning her own move, determined to take down the king who thought he had conquered her. Cruel King is a complete standalone prequel in the Royal Elite world, and no other book needs to be read before it.

Cruel King is the prequel I didn't know the Royal Elite series needed. Levi is exactly the kind of king you expect from Rina Kent: arrogant, cruel, and completely convinced he's in control. But what makes this book special is Astrid. She starts as the overlooked girl, the one everyone ignores, and watching her decide she's done being a victim is incredibly satisfying. Their war of wills is electric, and the way she slowly gets under his skin is pure gold.
What I loved most is how this book stands completely on its own while still enriching the Royal Elite world. You can pick it up without having read any of the other books and be completely swept away, but if you've already met Aiden King, the connections here add so much depth. Seeing where the ruthlessness of the King family comes from makes the whole series richer. Levi is a fascinating anti-hero, and understanding his cruel nature through Astrid's eyes is compelling.
Astrid is the heart of this story. She's been overlooked her whole life, and the moment she decides she's not going to take it anymore, the book ignites. Watching her match Levi's cruelty with her own quiet determination is deeply satisfying. She's not a damsel, she's a survivor who refuses to break, and her journey from hunted to hunter is the best part of the book. Their chemistry crackles, and the slow burn between them keeps you hooked until the very end.
The narration by Kylie Stewart and Aaron Shedlock is excellent. Shedlock gives Levi that deep, commanding arrogance that fits the king perfectly, while Stewart brings Astrid's vulnerability and growing fire to life. At 9 hours and 10 minutes, it's a well-paced listen that balances the cruelty with genuine emotion. If you're curious about the origins of the Royal Elite world, or if you've read Deviant King and want to understand the King family better, this is a must-listen. Rina Kent delivers again.
