I tend to be skeptical of campus sports romances advertised as the next big thing, mostly because the bet premise gets recycled so often it rarely surprises me anymore. What Are the Odds? did not entirely escape that feeling, but it won me over anyway, mostly because of how much Madi Leigh commits to Levi and Grace as actual people rather than just a setup.
Grace's grief is handled with more care than I expected from a book this focused on banter and chemistry. She is in Philadelphia because staying in Australia after losing both parents had become unbearable, and that backstory keeps showing up in small, believable ways instead of disappearing once the romance kicks into gear.
Levi is exactly the cocky hockey captain the premise promises, and the bet with the football team gives the early chapters a fun, almost juvenile energy that fits a college setting well. What surprised me is how quickly Leigh lets the wager start backfiring on him emotionally, long before Grace finds out about it.
The hockey versus football rivalry gives the book a built in sense of stakes beyond the romance itself, and the campus setting stays present throughout rather than fading into the background once the leads get together. Readers coming from other college sports romance series will recognize the rhythm here, but Leigh's dialogue has a sharper, funnier edge than most.
This is a spicy entry, and the audiobook does not shy away from that. If you have come across reviews calling this one of the more explicit titles in its genre, that reputation is earned, and the narration leans into it rather than softening it.
Vincent Skye and Sofia Lette split Levi and Grace, and their dynamic does a lot of work selling the slow shift from rivalry energy to something real. Skye plays Levi's overconfidence just broad enough to be funny without losing the vulnerability underneath, and Lette gives Grace a dry, grounded delivery that keeps her from feeling like a stock love interest. At a little over 12 hours, the pacing stays brisk from start to finish.
