A hunter, a vampire prince, and a war against the gods
For ten years, the world has been ravaged by war between humans and vampires, trapped under an eternal night where the only currency is blood. Kyrene scrapes by as a bounty hunter, wielding a blessed sword from the goddess of justice, a blade with opinions of its own. After a devastating loss, she commits a crime that makes her a target for mortals and gods alike, and she is still desperate for vengeance.
Her only chance at survival, and at revenge, is a deal with her enemy: Septimus, the silver-tongued vampire prince of the House of Blood. He offers her one final job, to slay the gods themselves. Together, they must hunt the ultimate marks, navigating a web of prophecies and curses while the world burns around them. Septimus is calculating, mysterious, and hiding secrets bloodthirsty enough to consume them both.
The most dangerous thing of all is the kinship Kyrene finds in him. Their growing attraction is deadly in a world where trust is a weapon, and Kyrene will stop at nothing to fulfill her ultimate goal: kill the goddess of vampires, even if it means sacrificing love for revenge. But when every god has a price and every curse has a hook, the line between hunter and hunted starts to blur.

Carissa Broadbent has been building toward this for four books, and The Lion and the Deathless Dark delivers on every promise. This is the darkest entry in the Crowns of Nyaxia series, a brutal, gorgeous, heart-wrenching story that follows a brand new couple ten years after the events of the previous duology. I went in expecting the usual Broadbent magic and I still was not prepared for that ending. I finished the last chapter and just sat there for a while.
Kyrene is not an easy heroine to love. She is raw, angry, reckless to the point of self-destruction, and completely convinced that vengeance is the only thing left worth living for. I found her frustrating at times, and I mean that as a compliment. She grows through the story, slowly and painfully, and the woman she becomes by the final chapters is earned. Septimus, meanwhile, is everything I wanted him to be since his first appearance in The Serpent and the Wings of Night: gorgeous, cunning, devastatingly charming, and hiding a softness he would rather die than admit to.
The romance is a slow burn in the truest sense. For most of the book, Kyrene and Septimus circle each other like predators, and the forced proximity of their mission means every moment together crackles with tension. Broadbent balances the banter with moments of startling tenderness, and when the story finally gives in to the attraction, it feels earned. The plot itself never loses momentum: a war against the gods, a sentient sword with a personality disorder, prophecies, curses, and a final act that rewrites everything I thought I knew. If you loved The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King, this is the next chapter you have been waiting for.
It is not a perfect book. It is longer than it strictly needs to be, and Kyrene's internal monologue gets repetitive in the middle stretch. But the ambition is staggering, and the ending, brutal as it is, lands with the weight of an entire series behind it. This is the penultimate chapter of Nyaxia, and it sets up what promises to be an unforgettable finale. I finished it gutted, thrilled, and already counting the days until book six.
